NBC to broadcast Virtual Kentucky Derby legends race
The creators of the Virtual Grand National are to expand their computer-generated racing service to the US, recreating a Virtual Kentucky Derby legends race between between the 13 horses who have completed America's Triple Crown.
With the real race cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis, the Virtual Grand National proved a big hit in Britain earlier this month. An audience of 4.8 million watched Potters Corner win the race and £2.6 million of profits from bookmakers was subsequently donated to NHS charities.
Now Inspired Entertainment are branching out to the US, with a simulation of the Churchill Downs Classic set to feature some of the biggest names in American racing history such as War Admiral, Secretariat and 2015 hero American Pharoah.
The Virtual Kentucky Derby will be broadcast on NBC on May 3, the original date for the race, which has been rearranged for September 5.
Online betting is illegal in Kentucky, but there is a competition running whereby fans are able to select the winner, donate to Kentucky Derby's emergency relief efforts and potentially win a VIP experience. Churchill Downs will then double that donation, up to $1 million.

Kevin Flanery, president of Churchill Downs racecourse, said: "Our fans will be captivated by the realistic view of the virtual race and we can debate, as we do each year, our favourite to win.
"The anticipation of which Triple Crown winner will emerge as the ultimate champion is thrilling, but most importantly, we are proud to use this platform as a force for good by raising money for the Covid-19 emergency initiatives."
