Jockey Jamie Mott fined for 'I'll break the whip rules' tweet

Jockey Jamie Mott has been fined on a misconduct charge following a social media post that suggested he would flout racing's whip rules in Australia.

Racing Victoria stewards held an inquiry into a comment posted by Mott on his Twitter account following Wednesday’s Sandown meeting.

In issuing a fine of A$1,500 (£825/€920), the stewards found Mott's comments were inflammatory and had the potential for serious consequences.

The punishment was handed out after Mott had tweeted: “So I have decided with the current whip rules in place in Victoria, if the owner/trainer is happy to pay my fine, I will use whip up to 9 times before 100m mark ‘breaking the rule’ giving us a better chance of winning.”

Mott was reacting to an incident at Sandown where he rode the runner-up Muswellbrook and protested against the winner Caffrey for alleged interference over the final 100m.

During the hearing it was established that Regan Bayliss, rider of Caffrey, had used his whip on nine occasions before the 100m mark.

While the protest was dismissed, Bayliss was hit with a seven-meeting careless riding suspension and a further $900 (£495/€550) in whip-related fines.
