High-flying jockey Tom Marquand is out of luck on his Australian farewell

Tom Marquand's hugely successful stint in Australia ended on a lower note as he drew a blank at Randwick on Saturday.

The British jockey had won the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at the same Sydney track on Addeybb the previous weekend, having landed the first top-level victory of his career on that horse at Rosehill the previous month.

But he could not add to his tally with eight rides on Saturday, finishing ninth of ten on Holyfield in the Group 1 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes, which was won by King's Legacy, and eighth of 14 on Fierce Impact in the Schweppes All Aged Stakes won by Tofane.

Marquand, who rode a Group-race double at Rosehill between his two wins on Addeybb, came closest to another win when fourth on Groundswell in a 6f handicap.

In a farewell tweet to Australia, he wrote: "It's been the trip of a lifetime, achieving one of my biggest, wildest childhood dreams in winning a Group 1, it has taken so much support and help from a lot of people and I feel so incredibly lucky to be in this position!"

His successful spell in Australia has caused his odds for the 2020 jockeys' championship to shorten and he will return to Britain as fourth favourite for the title, behind Oisin Murphy, Silvestre de Sousa and Danny Tudhope.

Success on Tofane gave New Zealand-based jockey Opie Bosson his fourth Group 1 win in Sydney this year.

"Not much is happening back home at the moment, so it's good to be here and good to get a few results," he said.

"I go back on Tuesday and then we have to have a bit of a discussion to see whether we move the family back to Australia or not, I've got a few things to sort out first."
