'He's a star' - Pat Cosgrave and Square De Luynes strike again in Stockholm Cup

Pat Cosgrave continued his successful association with Swedish superstar Square De Luynes as he got the better of Hollie Doyle and Outbox in the Stockholm Cup International at Bro Park on Sunday.
The victory was Square De Luynes’s third successive triumph in the 1m4f Group 3 – one of the highlights of the Swedish racing calendar – with Cosgrave on board for the last two after Rab Havlin partnered the Niels Petersen-trained six-year-old in 2019.
Doyle had taken the lead from the front-running Sublissimo on the Archie Watson-trained Outbox but soon had Square De Luynes looming on her outside rounding the sharp home turn, and Hambleton Racing's son of Frankel could not live with his rival up the straight.
They had to settle for second, with David Egan and the Ed Dunlop-trained Red Verdon taking fifth.
Square De Luynes has now won six Group 3 races and Cosgrave is eager to go travelling and test him against the best.
He said: "He's a star. He's quite fragile and we only get to see him two or three times a year but when he turns up he's pretty good. I got a nice clean passage through and when I asked him to go at the top of the straight it was over very quickly.
"I'm just lucky to ride him – he's a great horse and hopefully we can take him abroad somewhere to see how good he is. I only steer him around and it's up to Niels but he's done all he can do in this part of the world and I'm sure if he goes he'd make a big impression."
Cosgrave had gone agonisingly close to a second victory earlier on the card when riding the Petersen-trained Ramone in the Listed Lanwades Stud Stakes - the pair were in pole position a furlong out before being caught by Victoria Placa.
Five British trainers sent representatives to Bro Park but they were out of luck, with Jane Chapple-Hyam's Ambassadorial matching Outbox with a second-place finish in the Listed Tattersalls Nickes Minneslopning.
