How the 2021 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe unfolded on testing ground at Longchamp

The start

The most eyecatching element to the start of the race is Oisin Murphy's decision to hold Chrono Genesis wide of the field from her outside draw.

Torquator Tasso takes up a position towards the rear as several riders, notably Tom Marquand on Alenquer, Rossa Ryan on Mojo Star and James Doyle on Hurricane Lane, wait for someone to come through and take the lead.

That role is eventually fulfilled by Broome and Yutaka Take, while Torquator Tasso latches himself on to the back of Adayar, who races just behind the leading pack.

Four furlongs in

Chrono Genesis finally joins the main pack near the front as the strong-travelling Adayar forces his way through to challenge Broome for the lead, still pursued by Torquator Tasso.

Alongside the eventual winner sits Hurricane Lane, with Tarnawa skillfully guided into a stalking position by Christophe Soumillon. Just behind them is Snowfall, but the pace is only solid.

Halfway

Adayar has asserted and taken himself through to a clear lead under jockey William Buick.

Torquator Tasso, positioned midfield on the outside, receives a bump from Hurricane Lane as Doyle seeks to keep his position and enable himself a clear run out of the false straight.

Entering the home straight

Ears pricked, Adayar leads the field into the Longchamp straight, but despite looking to have plenty under the bonnet, he is not pressurising his opponents as much as Buick may like.

Hurricane Lane lacks the pace to hold his position and is ridden by Doyle, allowing Torquator Tasso to sweep past on his outside.

Snowfall is being smuggled into the race by Ryan Moore but is tight of room with Torquator Tasso in front and the weakening Deep Bond on his outside. Soumillon is getting serious on Tarnawa, too.

A furlong to run

Adayar, having tried to stretch his rivals, leads entering the final furlong, but not for long with the challengers hot on his heels.

Having been outpaced, Hurricane Lane is now powering on relentlessly down the middle, although the eye is drawn to the yellow and black colours on the outside of Torquator Tasso, who seems to be taking one stride to the two of every other horse in the race.

Tight for room on the inside, Tarnawa is not out of it either and squeezes through a gap between Adayar and Chrono Genesis, who have no more to give.

The winning post

The final destination of the Arc is not certain until the very end when Torquator Tasso gains the upper hand on his rivals.

As Tarnawa and Hurricane Lane go head-to-head towards the inside of the track, the German-trained outsider keeps on and on down the centre with his rider Rene Piechulek pushing him out hands and heels to record a memorable victory.

In behind, Tarnawa edges out Hurricane Lane for second, with both horses excelling themselves, while there is a gap back to Adayar in fourth.
