'She was like a motorbike' - Tenebrism lands Prix Jean Prat for red-hot Moore
Sunday: Prix Jean Prat, Deauville
Ryan Moore's riding talents hardly need advertising, but evidence he remains right at the top of his game came during a sun-soaked afternoon at Deauville on Sunday when he was in red-hot form with an 83-1 treble, which included a big-race strike on .
Moore rode at Newmarket on Thursday then flew to New York for rides at Belmont Park on Saturday but he was on a first-class conveyance in the Jean Prat – a race that had eluded him and Tenebrism's trainer Aidan O'Brien.
High class at two when she won the under an all-action Moore drive, the daughter of Caravaggio was far from disgraced by finishing eighth in the 1,000 Guineas and fourth in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.
However, O'Brien brought her to the boil perfectly for this 7f event, which boasted a £192,067 first prize, and she was delivered with deadly accuracy by her partner, showing no signs of jetlag.
O'Brien said: "This was a nice race for her after an encouraging run at Ascot and we knew she would be very comfortable back over seven furlongs. She did it very nicely and we are thrilled with her.
"She has the option of going back to Deauville for the Prix Rothschild next month on the way to the Matron, or else she could go straight to the Matron. We will see how she comes out of this before making a decision."
Settled in midfield, she was shaken up two out by Moore and led in the final 100 yards, sealing a decisive victory from the David Simcock-trained Light Infantry, who was narrowly ahead of Lusail for Richard Hannon.
Modern Games, Charlie Appleby's Poule d'Essai des Poulains winner, was fifth.
"She's always shown plenty," Moore told Sky Sports Racing. "She won the Cheveley Park on her second start and went to Newmarket for the Guineas and the ground was very fast. She never got into any rhythm but ran a good race at Ascot.
"She was still a bit green and struggled around the bend but finished well. Today, it was nice to come to a level track on nice ground.
"She had to wait for a gap but as soon as she got a bit of room she accelerated through it like a motorbike. Caravaggio was fast and she's out of Immortal Verse, who is well known in France; she's a pleasure to ride."
Moore added his mount was "very comfortable over seven furlongs" and O'Brien and owners Westerberg, Coolmore and Merriebelle Stables seem to have all options covered regarding her future, entering her in the Qatar Sussex Stakes over a mile at Goodwood, Haydock's 6f Betfair Sprint Cup and the Irish Champion Stakes, which is staged over 1m2f at Leopardstown.
Britain's three-time champion jockey then had sprints firmly on his mind after that victory, going on to land the Group 3 Prix de Ris-Orangis on , who is trained by Charlie Hills and races in the familiar mauve silks of Susan Roy, whose husband Paul was once chairman of the BHA.
That race was over 6f and Moore completed his treble over that distance in the Listed Prix Kistena aboard the improving , a raider from Lambourn just like Garrus.
Clive Cox is responsible for training the Adaay colt, who won a valuable York handicap on his previous start and is another engaged in the Sprint Cup.
