'I'm gutted to be missing Pyledriver' - knee op rules Dwyer out for turf season

Martin Dwyer is aiming to be back in the saddle within six months after undergoing a further operation on torn ligaments in his knee sustained in a freak accident on the gallops.

Dwyer, who landed the Derby on Sir Percy in 2006, will be regulated to the sidelines when Pyledriver runs in next week's DahlBury Coronation Cup at Epsom, having also missed the regular ride in the Sheema Classic at Meydan in March.

He sustained the injury when his leather snapped while galloping a horse for Brian Meehan that month.

Dwyer, 46, said: "I had an operation last week and the ligament has been reconstructed, they took some of my hamstring away and used that to reattach the ligaments as they were both torn.

"They told me it could take six months before I'm back but I'll be working hard to get back sooner. I'm laying low for the first couple of weeks after the op then I'll start my rehab and go back to Oaksey House. It's a long road to recovery but I'll know a little more each month.

"I'm gutted to be missing the ride on Pyledriver next week, maybe I can get back for the end of the year and he might be running abroad in November and December."

Pyledriver, who was ridden by Frankie Dettori in Dubai, is the general 2-1 joint favourite with Manobo for the Group 1 contest on Friday week.

Ben Curtis, who was taken to Whiston Hospital for further assessment after suffering a possible shoulder injury on eighth-placed Skycutter in the 2m handicap at Haydock on Saturday, is set to return on Thursday evening with five rides booked at Carlisle.
