Panic buying over fuel supplies is a “big problem” for British horseracing as the sport’s participants reported struggles at the pumps and concerns about how to get to the races.

There have been widespread reports of empty filling stations and lengthy queues for those still stocked with fuel, triggered by a shortage of heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers to deliver supplies.

The struggle to access fuel has left jockeys and trainers scrapping for petrol and diesel just as much as winners, with one Group 1-winning handler warning if they ran out of fuel they would not have any runners.
