Huge shock as Mullins odds-on favourite beaten by 50-1 shot
There was a huge shock in the concluding bumper at Listowel on Monday night when the Willie Mullins-trained 4-9 favourite Fabulous Saga was brushed aside by Michael Hourigan's Humm Baby, who returned at a starting price of 50-1.
Owners always love celebrating a winner but doing so while clutching a 50-1 betting slip makes things ever better.
Hourigan said: "I couldn't tell anyone to back her really, but she was 50-1 this morning in the paper so I told them [the owners] to have a few bob on each-way and hope that she would be placed.
"She has some pedigree – Willie Mullins won two bumpers with the dam Sonne Cinq."
Punters will have been left scratching their heads after Humm Baby, who was well beaten on her three previous starts, turned over the odds-on favourite, but there was no fluke about this dominant six-and-a-half-length success, achieved under the trainer's daughter Laura.
It was a testing day for favourite backers at Listowel with just one market leader – 4-1 shot Deans Road in the 2m3f handicap chase – proving successful on the eight-race card.
