'His effort can be upgraded markedly' - horses to note from Royal Ascot week

As you'd expect, this latest edition of Winners In Waiting – our weekly round-up of all the horses noted by our race-readers as worth following – features a few Royal Ascot runners but also plenty of interesting types from other meetings over the last few days.

Our team watches – and writes a descriptive in-running comment for – every horse who runs in Britain and Ireland.

There are three different categories, each relating to a specific in-running comment that is used to denote those who appear most interesting with the future in mind.

Did well in the circumstances

Okita Sushi
Third, Royal Ascot, June 14

Finished strongly down the outside for an unlikely third. Second in the Listed Orby Stakes over 1m4f at the Curragh last month, this was a fine effort on only the fourth start of his career and he shapes like he'll improve again for the step up to 2m.

Flying Dolphin
Fifth, Royal Ascot, June 16

Fared the best of those who attempted to come from behind and this effort can be marked up, especially as he had to wait for a run. There's enough in the way he ran, coupled with his pedigree, to suggest he'll stay a bit further and he's one to keep in mind.

Sixth, Royal Ascot, June 16

Tactical: ran well in the Buckingham Palace StakesCredit: Mark Cranham

Was in rear on the wrong side of the group and got stopped at a crucial time 2f out. Having his second run since a wind operation, he finished off well and can have his effort upgraded markedly.

Thunderbear
Second, Down Royal, June 17

Tailed off having got upset in the stalls on his debut, was more settled this time but again missed the break and was some six lengths adrift of the main pack after a furlong. He came through well in the second half of the race and is better than he showed.

11th, Royal Ascot, June 17

Gave himself no chance with a slow start, but the fact he still beat over half the field will leave his supporters ruing their luck.

A 15,000gns juvenile, was strong in the market and really caught the eye in finishing a closing third. Roger Fell has his string in fine fettle and this one will be of interest next time.

Blairlogie
Second, Lingfield, June 13

Rattled home and would have given the winner plenty to think about had he found daylight sooner in the home straight. Going easily but trapped behind a wall of horses over 1f out, his rider had to apply the brakes before switching his mount sharply right, by which time all chance had gone. He did wonders to get as close as he did, and should gain compensation in something similar.

Take A Stand
Fourth, Lingfield, June 16

Dropped in from his wide draw, thundered home from the back of the field and is capable of winning in similar company if he gets the breaks.

Second, Down Royal, June 17

Ran well on debut but wasn't getting to the winner. He was green in the closing stages and is likely to come on plenty for the experience. He should have no problem stepping up to 1m.

A half-sister to the same connections' 95-rated Bullace, shaped with a good deal of promise on debut, just being unable to match three useful sorts with experience. She should come on plenty for the outing and will be of interest next time.

First, Haydock, June 18

A 30,000euros Gleneagles half-brother to four winners, attracted support and made a really pleasing debut. He had all his rivals in trouble some way out and galloped on relentlessly, suggesting longer distances shouldn't be a problem. He looks useful.
