'He's the nap on the card' - Spotlight verdicts for red-hot Buick's Friday rides
William Buick has been in stellar form during Glorious Goodwood, enjoying five winners across the first three days. He has a full book of seven rides on Friday, including leading fancies Checkandchallenge, Noble Dynasty and Rebel Romance. Here our spotlight team assess the chances of all seven . . .
Withhold (1.50)
Coral Goodwood Handicap
Won a couple of big staying handicaps earlier in his career and finished second (good; off 2lb higher) in this race 12 months ago; finished five lengths behind Reshoun at Newbury most recently but has a good chance if back to best.
Star rating ****
Checkandchallenge (2.25)
Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes
Made it 2-2 with a smooth Listed win at Newcastle (1m, AW) in April and bounced back from his 2,000 Guineas run when going close off a lofty mark in a handicap at Sandown (1m, good to firm) four weeks ago; that performance reads well in today's context and he could have more to offer, too.
Star rating *****
Noble Dynasty (3.00)
Coral Golden Mile Handicap
Having been gelded, this lightly raced four-year-old took his form to a new level when winning in good style on his recent return at Newmarket (1m, good to firm); goes well fresh and has to back up that latest effort but he's 6lb ahead of the handicapper under a 3lb penalty and is drawn low; lots to like.
Star rating ****
Lazuli (3.35)
King George Qatar Stakes
Justified favouritism in similar event at Meydan (good) in February, beating Acklam Express and registering his third Group win; however, finished behind that rival and Equilateral in the King's Stand on return from four-month absence; needs to step up on that effort.
Star rating ***
Rebel’s Romance (4.10)
L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Glorious Stakes
Record of 4-7 on artificial surfaces, including Group 2 win on dirt at Meydan; made a successful turf debut when upped to 1m4f in Listed event at Newmarket (good) last month, readily beating stablemate Kemari and running to a smart RPR; leading player on the figures and remains unexposed in this sphere; strongly respected. He's the nap on the card.
Star rating *****
Kaasib (4.45)
Coral Beaten-By-A-Length Free Bet Nursery
Behind two of these in the Windsor Castle and, with blinkers joining the tongue-tie, he was beaten two lengths when second of five on his nursery debut at Ffos Las (5f, good to firm); the third did win last weekend but it's not inspiring form in the context of this race.
Star rating **Sharp Combo (5.20)
Oliver Brown Handicap
In and out this term and soundly beaten at Haydock last time, but the soft ground may not have suited; prior to that he was a clear second to Youthful King at Windsor (1m2f, good to firm) and he's now 9lb better off with that rival, who beat him by about a length and followed up at Sandown; interesting.
Star rating ***
