Iconic Knight
Second, Goodwood, Friday

This speedy five-year-old came back in from the cold when striking at Chepstow last month and has been held twice since, but there have been excuses and he's no doubt capable of adding to his tally this season.

At Goodwood last week, on desperate going, he tanked along in a fair handicap, but young rider Hannah Fraser's inexperience was evident and he just got collared after taking up the running. He'll still be well treated on old form despite nudging up a pound or two. [Dave Orton]

Kendergarten Kop
Fourth, Lingfield, Thursday

It's fair to say Kendergarten Kop left something on the table when fourth at Lingfield last week. He's happiest on the all-weather and was having a 25th career outing, but the five-year-old does take some knowing and jockey Martin Harley was aboard for the first time since riding him on his second start at two.

He just got too far back on the inside and the race was all but over when he finally got organised in the home straight. Look out for him in the coming weeks as he's a Polytrack winner waiting to happen again. [Dave Orton]

Mustaqbal
Fourth, Ayr, Monday

Mustaqbal ran a promising race at Ayr last week, especially considering he was slowly away and met trouble in running. It’s often disastrous when a horse misses the break and gets behind on the round course at the Scottish venue. That, coupled with interference in the straight, means it’s to his credit that he finished his race off strongly to take fourth once getting a clear passage.

Michael Dods has been among the winners lately and his eight-year-old looks ready to strike. He’s 7lb below his last winning mark, enjoys cut in the ground and should be on everyone’s radar. He has been declared at Ripon on Tuesday. [David Revers]

First Lott
Fifth, Newmarket, Friday

The Tom Dascombe-trained youngster has caught the eye on both racecourse starts. She ran better than her finishing position suggests last week when keeping on from a fair way back in what looked a decent novice event, won by a well-bred Godolphin filly in A’Shaari.

This performance backed up the impression that she’s a useful two-year-old from her debut run at Goodwood when running green throughout. She didn’t have things go her way against the stands’ rail, too. Three subsequent winners have come out of that Goodwood race and she could pop up at a decent price sooner rather than later. Lunar Jet
Third, Newmarket, Saturday

This six-year-old was running for the second time after a mid-season break in this 1m2f handicap and, staying on well in a race not run to suit, he indicated he will be winning again before too long. Third to the progressive Amir Kabir, who should also be winning more races, this was much better than his effort at Chester the time before.

Keen in the early stages and placed towards the rear, he made pleasing progress late on to be beaten just a length and a half. A stronger pace will see him to better effect in a similar type of race. A four-time scorer, Lunar Jet achieved those victories off marks of 71, 78, 83 and 91, so this effort off 80 bodes very well.

The son of Ask is versatile with regards to the ground, so keep a very close eye on him if he is declared at Haydock on Friday. [Maddy Playle]

Wicklow
Fourth, Goodwood, Sunday

The opening maiden auction stakes over a mile probably didn't contain a superstar, but the winner Classic Lord clearly appreciated the switch to turf while second-placed Grand Scheme boasted form behind subsequent Gimcrack winner Minzaal.

The horse who caught my eye finished just two and three-quarter lengths behind in fourth. Wicklow raced greenly on what was his first racecourse appearance, coming on and off the bridle for Tom Marquand. Yet he appeared to get the hang of things late on, producing a fine finishing effort.

Out of a German dam who won twice over 11 and a half furlongs – other stamina influences feature in his pedigree – while he is by Twilight Son (won Sprint Cup and Diamond Jubilee on good to soft). He may be at his best on testing ground going forward and looks a decent prospect for Tom Ward, whose string usually progress with racing. [Maddy Playle]
