Monsieur Patat
Sixth, Lingfield, Thursday

Monsieur Patat was beaten eight lengths in this 5f handicap and it's a long time since he managed to land a blow in a race, but he wasn't particularly well suited by the drop in trip and ran well in the circumstances.

Robyn Brisland's gelding had never run over the minimum distance before, but connections are clearly trying to experiment to work a revival – his previous three runs, all disappointing, had been over at least a mile – and there were at least signs of promise this time as he caught the eye keeping on late.

He's on a good mark now, given he was running off 58 having been as high as 72 last year, and he could well exploit that soon at a decent price over 6f or 7f. [Dave Toft]

Ritchie Valens
Fourth, Chelmsford, Thursday

Ritchie Valens isn't enjoying much luck at the moment. Having been forced very wide when fifth over this course and distance a fortnight earlier, this time he was squeezed out when coming with a promising effort passing the furlong pole.

Tom Clover's gelding, who had been backed beforehand to suggest a big run was expected, ran on again when switched out wide, but by then it was too late.

Although he may not have beaten the winner with a clear run, Ritchie Valens would probably have finished second at worst. He is certainly handicapped to win, being 1lb lower than when last successful, and deserves a change of luck. [David Bellingham]

Magnolia State
Second, Haydock, Friday

Although the form of many races in very soft ground can't be taken at face value, there was no mistaking the promise of Richard Fahey’s newcomer Magnolia State behind Godolphin's evens favourite Wild Beauty.

This late March foal, a half-sister to Group-placed 5f juvenile winner Escape Route, showed her inexperience from the off and, although there were only six runners, didn't see a lot of daylight for much of the second half of the race.

While no match for the more experienced winner once in the clear, she showed enough to suggest she's capable of picking up a similar race granted normal improvement, and she's unlikely to be inconvenienced by a sounder surface. [Richard Young]

Profound Alexander
Fourth, Goodwood, Saturday

Slowly away and too green to do herself justice when sixth of ten at Windsor on her debut 12 days earlier, Profound Alexander had the rail draw on this occasion but was held up and found herself locked away on the inner for much of the journey.

Badly messed around with initially looking to start her run, William Muir and Chris Grassick's filly had lost her chance long before the time she found daylight, but she picked up well and was eating up the ground in the closing stages.

She may well have finished second with an uninterrupted passage and clearly has enough ability to win an ordinary novice. [Marcus Buckland]

Makanah
Fourth, York, Saturday

Makanah progressed as a five-year-old in 2020 and this promising display suggested he hasn't finished improving yet.

In a typically competitive York sprint handicap in which the smart prospect Pendleton beat one-time Royal Ascot favourite Sunday Sovereign, Makanah did best of those to come from well off the pace as he ran on into fourth.

He should be cherry-ripe now after two runs this season and, having won twice during his fruitful campaign last season, there should be more successes to come this term. [Keith McHugh]
