Charlie Appleby is relishing the prospect of Adayar clashing with the mighty Baaeed in the Qipco Champion Stakes (4.00) at Ascot on Saturday, a race he says is in the spirit of good horses taking each other on to establish their greatness.

Last year's Derby and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner is 7-2 second favourite to spoil the Baaeed retirement party in the Group 1 feature, which could go a significant way to determining the destination of this year's trainers' championship with £1.3 million up for grabs.

Appleby said: "It's what racing wants. You want the sport of good horses taking each other on. We all know Baaeed is the one to beat but if he does beat us it's another stamp on his passport to say he's beaten a Derby winner.
