Alnajeeb
Third, Beverley, Tuesday

Readers were advised to put Alnajeeb into the tracker last month following a promising third at Pontefract, and anyone yet to act on that recommendation should do so now, with subsequent events confirming his turn is close.

That Pontefract run has been boosted, with stablemates in second and fourth going on to win, and Alnajeeb showed plenty of promise again on this handicap debut despite little going right for him.

The three-year-old found himself in a poor position after a sluggish start and could not make an impact off what was a dawdling gallop. He did well to nose his way into third on the line and will show a mark of 67 to underestimate him sooner rather than later. [Mark Brown]

Aire Valley Lad
Fourth, Sedgefield, Tuesday

This was a decent novice chase for May, with 140+ hurdlers Beyond The Clouds and Christopher Wood finishing first and third, but it was the performance of another chasing debutant that caught the eye.

Aire Valley Lad is a bumper and hurdle winner but had struggled since going handicapping over hurdles, finishing no better than seventh in two runs and slipping to a mark of 101.

However, he managed to keep tabs with the big guns until tiring at the second last and, like a lot from his stable, he seems sure to do better over fences, with his lowly mark potentially proving lenient. [Richard Lowther]

Throne Hall
Third, York, Wednesday

Throne Hall has quickly made up into a smart performer and this was another fine run when third behind the potential Group-class Ilaraab in a race representing strong handicap form.

The four-year-old quickly recovered the ground he had lost at the start and stuck on willingly in the last quarter-mile to get within three and a half lengths of the progressive winner. He looked well worth a try over a bit further at some point, something that is also backed up by the dam's side of his pedigree.

Given this was only his sixth start, it's not inconceivable that he'll develop into an Ebor type but, irrespective of whether he lines up for that back at this venue in August, there's certainly more races to be won with him. [Richard Young]

Jadhlaan
Third, York, Wednesday

Jadhlaan finished only third when 3-1 favourite on debut in a 5f novice at York, but that looks likely to prove a good race and this horse travelled just about best of all.

He couldn't sustain his challenge, just giving way late on in a close finish, but he had been rather stuck on the outer of the group and looked a little green under pressure, edging right.

A repeat of that level should see Jadhlaan win an ordinary novice and he should improve so is potentially one for a higher level. His dam won two Listed races for the same connections. [Ron Wood]

Mas Poder
Fourth, York, Friday

No horse has ever won the Listed Marygate Fillies' Stakes on their debut so the performance of Kevin Ryan's juvenile first time out has to go down as an encouraging one.

This £42,000 breeze-up purchase was unsurprisingly quite easy in the market and lost a bit of ground at the start, but was still travelling easily passing the two-furlong pole before looking green when asked for her effort.

She still finished fourth behind a highly regarded filly who will be seen at Royal Ascot next and she should come on a good deal for this initial experience.

An ordinary maiden or novice event should be a formality before she goes back up in grade and she's an exciting prospect. [Richard Young]

Al Shibli
Third, Newbury, Saturday

This is a race Richard Hannon targets with his Royal Ascot prospects, but on each occasion his winner came here on the back of a debut win and that was the case once again this year as Dukebox followed up a debut victory at Kempton.

However, Dukebox's stablemate Al Shibli had been preferred in the market, which spoke so strongly in favour of him that he was sent off favourite despite the lack of a previous run. There was no questioning the promise shown in defeat.

The Shadwell-owned colt showed signs of greenness once shaken up yet stayed on to finish close up. He's thought to want quicker ground and will likely prove best of these in due course. [Steffan Edwards]
