Hayley Turner double helps seal international jockeys' team win
Hayley Turner rode her first South African double – and clinched victory for an international jockeys’ team – in the annual match against the South Africans at Turffontein in Johannesburg on Saturday.
She romped to a four-length win on the Michael Azzie-trained 8-1 shot Al Borak in the Citizen Handicap and followed up on 15-4 second favourite At Hand for St John Gray in the World Sports Betting Handicap, sweeping to the front a furlong and a half from home to score by a length from the Paul Hanagan-ridden Oyster King.
She said: “We all want to get on trips like this but it’s really different to riding in Britain. The heat and the altitude make it hard work.”
Gray, owner, breeder and trainer of At Hand, was most impressed and said: “When I saw that Hayley was down to ride mine I felt that this gave us a big chance.”
Turner is no stranger to success in team riding events as she won the Silver Saddle at the Shergar Cup for the second year in a row in August.
Dual champion S’Manga Khumalo rode a double for the home team but Andrea Atzeni partnered two seconds and a fourth, Hanagan had a second, third and fourth and Martin Dwyer a third. Franny Norton and Robert Havlin both drew a blank but the visitors still won by 215 points to 185, only their fourth victory in this event since it was introduced in 2008.
