Luckless four-year-old Waldkonig is to miss the rest of the turf season after failing to recover from a foot infection that ruled out a summer campaign which might have culminated with a crack at the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in October.

The son of Kingman, who on Monday was available at 33-1 for the Arc, has not been sighted since recording his biggest win to date in the Group 3 Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown in April when he had the likes of Hukum in arrears.

Trained by John and Thady Gosden, Waldkonig is at his part-owners Newsells Park Stud near Royston recovering from his setback which may keep him out until 2022.

Gary Coffey, racing manager to Newsells Park, said: “Unfortunately Waldkonig picked up a foot infection before Royal Ascot and has taken a lot of time to recover.

"I don’t know when he’ll be back as he’s being led out at the moment but it won’t be in time to run on the turf this year. It could be that he has an all-weather campaign through the winter but we'll see how his recovery goes.”

Waldkonig, whom Newsells Park Stud own in conjunction with Gestut Ammerland, is a half-brother to 2019 Arc winner Waldgeist.

The entry fee for the Arc is €8,300 and Coffey said: “We paid the money to put him in the Arc literally the day before he picked up the injury. Hopefully he's now on the mend.”
