Godolphin's Derby heroes Adayar and Hurricane Lane headline St Leger entries
Godolphin's two Derby heroes Adayar and Hurricane Lane feature among 31 entries for the Cazoo St Leger at Doncaster on September 11.
Both trained by Charlie Appleby, Hurricane Lane heads the betting for the world's oldest Classic at a general 9-4 following a prolific campaign that has seen him win the Dante Stakes and Irish Derby, as well as storming to a six-length victory in the Grand Prix de Paris this month.
He finished third to Adayar in the Derby at Epsom in June, when pulling off both his front shoes, with his stablemate set to contest the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes at Ascot this Saturday.
Should Adayar ultimately line up at Doncaster, the son of Frankel would be bidding to become the first horse since Reference Point in 1987 to complete the Derby-St Leger. Godolphin have won the final Classic of the season six times already.
Epsom second Mojo Star, who finished fifth in the Irish equivalent behind Hurricane Lane when last seen, is another entered for Doncaster.
His trainer Richard Hannon said: "The St Leger is on the radar for Mojo Star. We've given him the entry and we'll see how we go. He has come out of Ireland fine and had a little break since then. I'm not too sure where he is going to run next, but I am pleased with him."
Irish Derby runner-up Lone Eagle and King Edward VII Stakes winner Alenquer – last seen finishing third behind Hurricane Lane at Longchamp – have also been given entries, while Aidan O'Brien has 13 possibles, including Wordsworth and Oaks third Divinely, as he bids for a seventh victory in the race.
Joseph O'Brien landed a first British Classic success in last year's running with Galileo Chrome and the trainer could be represented by recent impressive Fairyhouse winner Okita Soushi, who is set to run at Leopardstown on Thursday.
"Okita Soushi is declared to run in a mile-and-five-furlong race at Leopardstown on Thursday, so we’ll see how he gets on there," said the trainer.
"He won his maiden nicely and we think he has the makings of a nice stayer, although whether he is going to be quite ready for a St Leger remains to be seen. We felt it was worth making an entry as we wanted to keep our options open."
