Gina Andrews hopes to be an inspiration after landmark win for female riders
Gina Andrews hopes her landmark achievement in riding out her claim can continue to inspire girls to seek careers as jockeys.
Success aboard the Pam Sly-trained Takeit Easy at Ludlow on Monday was the 75th of Andrews' career since taking her first ride in May 2008 and made her the first female amateur in Britain to have ridden out her claim primarily over jumps.
Serena Brotherton holds the record for most wins under rules as a female amateur in Britain with a tally of 127 career winners, just one of which came over jumps. Andrews is the most successful over jumps with 67 victories, plus seven on the Flat and one in Ireland.
She said: "I hope I can keep setting the bar higher each year. I think this, like other things, can inspire more girls to keep trying and realise that anything's possible. I think Rachael Blackmore has proved that if you're good enough you'll get chances. It's great for amateurs too, you get to ride against the best in the world really. We've very honoured and privileged."
Andrews had been working towards the feat for some time, and although she was delayed when suffering multiple injuries at Cheltenham in December, she achieved the landmark before long-serving agent Chris Broad retired.
She added: "I'm absolutely delighted. It's been a bit of a goal for a while now and I wanted to do it before my agent Chris Broad retired as he's been with me since I started. He's been a great support for me and I'll be forever grateful for all the winners I've had over the course of my career.
"I wanted to do it on one of Pam's as everyone knows she's been a huge supporter of mine. It was very good of Kielan Woods to let me ride too as it's his ride. I missed a few winners when I was out injured so I would have ridden my claim out sooner. I'm back to full health now which is the main thing."
Andrews' biggest win is her Cheltenham Festival success aboard Domesday Book in the 2017 Kim Muir for Stuart Edmunds.
