Gambles can be sensationalised but they can also erode confidence in racing

There are so many different strands to this that it is hard to pull them all together, but here are the key points as I see them.

Let us start by saying that it was a well-organised coup that just went awry. If you were one of those who stood to win six figures, your heart must have been pounding when Gallahers Cross moved alongside the leader and touched 1.4 in running on Betfair, but it didn't happen.

The coup appears to have been specifically designed for this day when the majority of punters would have been focusing on the Irish Gold Cup and the Dublin Racing Festival at Leopardstown, and those who took big prices did so at the same time, or so we are told.
