From governing body to commercial player - a racing institution through the ages

The Jockey Club is an institution of horseracing in Britain and has been since its creation in 1750, although mentions of it do exist before that year.

Its Pall Mall founders were, according to the Jockey Club's website, "some of the most influential people in the country" and it soon had a new home in Newmarket where rules were quickly introduced to ensure races run there took place fairly.

Those laws would be adopted by other tracks and racing jurisdictions and the Jockey Club became the official governing body for the sport in Britain.
