Frankie Dettori at Royal Ascot: which big names might the superstar jockey ride?

With Royal Ascot fast approaching, Frankie Dettori will be out to land more top-level success at the prestigious meeting. With 76 winners, Dettori ranks behind only Lester Piggott for Royal Ascot success and will be aiming to add more to his tally when the meeting begins on Tuesday, June 14. We have picked out some of the top jockey's key rides at his favourite fixture . . .

Lord North

Prince of Wales's Stakes (Group 1), 3.40 Wednesday

Lord North bids to regain his title in the Prince of Wales's Stakes after landing the contest in 2020 under James Doyle.

Dettori has taken over the ride and steered the six-year-old to two Dubai Turf successes, the most recent of those in March.

The pair finished fourth last time out when joint-favourite in the Tattersalls Gold Cup but will face even stiffer opposition at Royal Ascot, with the progressive Bay Bridge, globetrotter Mishriff and Japanese star Shahryar among the entries.

Emily Upjohn

Ribblesdale Stakes (Group 2), 3.40 Thursday

Eyes will be on the John and Thady Gosden-trained filly to see if she can bounce back from an unlucky run in the Oaks.

Sent off favourite for the Epsom Classic, Emily Upjohn stumbled out the gates and was left with significant ground to make up. Dettori threw down his challenge to the line but was denied a short head by Tuesday.

It was an admirable run given the circumstances and a clean start could see the three-year-old back to her best, with the filly still holding several top-level entries for the rest of the season.

Stradivarius

Gold Cup (Group 1), 4.20 Thursday

Stradivarius, surely the most popular Royal Ascot mount of Dettori's, bids to emulate Yeats with a fourth Gold Cup success at the age of eight.

The staying star opened his account this season with victory in the Yorkshire Cup, which propelled him to 18 Group-level wins, the most of any horse trained in Europe.

He will likely face tougher opposition in Thursday's Group 1 contest, where old rival Trueshan and newcomer Kyprios could make formidable competitors if conditions suit.

Inspiral

Coronation Stakes (Group 1), 4.20 Friday

The wait for Inspiral to make her three-year-old debut looks to draw to a close next week as the unbeaten filly lines up for the Coronation Stakes.

The Cheveley Park runner capped off a perfect season with success in the Fillies' Mile, promoting her to ante-post favourite for the 1,000 Guineas and crowning her champion two-year-old filly.

However, Inspiral was ruled of the Newmarket Classic after missing a key period of training and was subsequently not ready in time for a seasonal return in the Listed Heron Stakes.

She now heads straight for a fascinating Group 1 clash with Homeless Songs, who dazzled in the Irish 1,000 Guineas when finishing more than five lengths clear of Tuesday.

Reach For The Moon

King Edward VII Stakes (Group 2), 5.35 Friday

The Queen's biggest chance of a Royal Ascot winner in her Platinum Jubilee year could rest in the hands of Dettori when he partners Reach For The Moon in the King Edward VII Stakes on Friday.

The three-year-old is yet to be out of the top two in six starts and was headed by My Prospero in the Heron Stakes on his seasonal return.

The pair were denied Royal Ascot success last year, with Dettori coming within half a length of landing the Chesham Stakes on the final day of the meeting.

Next week's contest will mark a significant step up in trip and it will be intriguing to see if the Queen's runner can go one better this time round.
