Four stars who could shine at Newmarket's two-day fixture

The Future Champions Festival kicks off on Friday with two days of top-class action over Newmarket's Rowley Mile. We take a look at some of the potential superstars on show.

Sound And Silence (1.50 Newmarket, Friday)

Charlie Appleby's Sound And Silence has quietly put together a formidable season and victory in Friday's Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes could remind British racing fans of his talents.

The Windsor Castle winner at Royal Ascot put a disappointing run in the July Stakes behind him when defying a penalty in the Listed Roses Stakes at the York Ebor meeting. Since then he has finished second in a Group 3 at Chantilly and then run away with a similar contest at Maisons-Laffitte by three lengths.

Happily (3.35 Newmarket, Friday)

She beat the boys on Arc day in the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and now goes in search of her third top level win of the year back against her own sex in the Fillies' Mile.

Her stablemate and Moyglare Stakes victim Magical reopposes, while eight-length novice winner Magic Lily, May Hill Stakes winner Laurens and Princess Margaret runaway train Nyaleti provide talented opposition. However, it may be another O'Brien inmate she has in her sights as, with an impressive victory, she could depose Clemmie as ante-post favourite for the 1,000 Guineas.

Ghaiyyath (2.25 Newmarket, Saturday)

As a son of Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Nightime, and with a price tag of €1,100,000, hopes were always high that Ghaiyyath could be something out of the ordinary, and the fact he was sent off at 6-5 on debut suggested he had been pleasing at home.

Ghaiyyath was unable to justify favouritism at Doncaster but showed much improved form on his second start at Newmarket, bolting up by five lengths in the style of a colt with plenty still to offer.

Expert Eye (3.00 Newmarket, Saturday)

Top billing goes to Sir Michael Stoute's unbeaten Vintage Stakes winner Expert Eye, who is the odds-on favourite for Britain's premier juvenile Group 1 – the Darley Dewhurst Stakes.

He has been favourite for next year's 2,000 Guineas ever since that four and a half-length victory at Glorious Goodwood and a Group 1 win over seven furlongs on the Guineas course against the likes of July Stakes winner Cardsharp, 2.6m guineas purchase Emaraaty, Champagne Stakes scorer Seahenge and Middle Park winner U S Navy Flag would only result in him shortening further for the May Classic from his current 4-1.
