Former jockey Kevin Tobin bids to raise vital funds for Do It For Dan campaign

Former jump jockey Kevin Tobin is planning to run a marathon around his back garden on Friday for the Do It For Dan campaign, which aims to raise more than €2 million for Dan Donoher.

Donoher turned one last month and suffers from a rare genetic neuromuscular disease that drastically reduces his life expectancy. The campaign has already raised almost €900,000, which will be put towards crucial treatment that is only available in the US.

Tobin, who earlier this year spoke openly about his battle with depression, was keen to do his bit and will attempt to complete 350 laps of his garden at his home in Charlotte, North Carolina.

He joins a number of racing figures, including Joseph O'Brien, who have run a furlong or more to help raise awareness and funds.

"I've wanted to help out since the coronavirus lockdown," said Tobin. "There are so many people in a worse spot than me and I stumbled upon trainers and jockeys running furlongs for Dan.

"I looked into the campaign and it broke my heart. The most beautiful little man and his family are fighting an enormous battle, while we're upset that we have to stay at home.

"I immediately knew this was the cause I wanted to support but didn't know what to do. We don't really have a following but then I saw Captain Tom Moore raising millions for the NHS doing lengths of his garden before his 100th birthday and that was it – no excuses.

"I'm honestly hoping that whatever I raise is just the cherry on top and that they surpass their target. I just want to help a little."
