Former champion jockey Jamie Spencer cleared for return to action after injury

Jamie Spencer has been cleared to resume race-riding having been sidelined since the middle of April after breaking his hip in a freak accident on the gallops.

The former champion jockey was injured close to Warren Hill in Newmarket when the two-year-old he was riding for David Simcock spooked and slipped over.

Having recently returned to morning work, Spencer has now been cleared to return to competitive action and hopes to be back at the weekend.

"It has been a long three months since I suffered my injury on April 17, but I'm delighted to say that I passed all the relevant tests on Wednesday afternoon and I have been cleared to return this weekend," said the rider.

Writing in his Unibet blog, he added: "Dr Jerry Hill, the BHA’s chief medical adviser, has seen the reports, and also spoke to my consultant earlier in the week, and he is happy for me to book rides as of now.

"My recovery has been slow and sometimes frustrating and getting the balance right as regards training versus the pain levels has been interesting and challenging, but thankfully I have now reached the point I targeted from the morning after surgery.

"I have been very fortunate that I have had a great team advising and encouraging me from day one of the injury."

Spencer, 40, rode in Dubai and Hong Kong in the winter and also won a valuable race in Australia on Chief Ironside. He had ridden five winners from just 17 rides on the all-weather in Britain in 2020 before racing was suspended in March due to the coronavirus outbreak.
