Five horses who should relish the slower conditions on Saturday
A deluge of rain hit Britain on Thursday, flooding much of Newmarket and its gallops, and the going turned soft for the major British Flat meetings at Goodwood and Newmarket for the first time this summer. We take a look at the horses who may welcome the recent rainfall and the return to slower underfoot conditions.
Tacarib Bay
2.25 Goodwood
Tacarib Bay's first win of the season came on soft ground at Haydock on what was also his handicap debut. The Richard Hannon-trained colt made a winning debut at the same track on soft as a two-year-old, as well as finishing third to subsequent Prix Jacques le Marois second Light Infantry on the same going description.
Having finished second at Ascot on good to firm last time out, a return to an easier surface could see Tacarib Bay go one better.
Mo Celita
3.15 Newmarket
Mo Celita is unbeaten on soft ground in varying grades having won a Thirsk seller and a Listed race at Deauville. Adrian Nicholls' filly has also won on heavy at Haydock, come third on very soft in a Chantilly Group 3 and most noticeably finished fourth in the Prix de l'Abbaye last October.
A return to her favoured conditions combined with the first-time booking of Frankie Dettori could result in a first win of the season for the filly.
Vadream
3.15 Newmarket
Another who could enjoy conditions in the same Listed contest as Mo Celita is Vadream, who recorded the highest Racing Post Rating of her career (109) when winning a soft-ground Ascot Group 3 last season.
The Charlie Fellowes-trained four-year-old is without a win since, but did also manage third in last year's Jersey Stakes on soft and could be dangerous dropping in grade.
Mutasaabeq
3.35 Goodwood
Mutasaabeq is clear of his four Celebration Mile rivals on official ratings and is rightfully leading the market for the Goodwood's Group 2 highlight on Saturday.
The Shadwell-owned four-year-old began his season by winning on soft ground at Thirsk and his Newmarket debut win also came on heavy, demonstrating that he can handle the likely conditions. A flop at last year's Royal Ascot on soft can be excused given the way some of those big-field contests at the royal meeting can pan out.
Aggagio
5.20 Goodwood
Aggagio is two from two on soft ground in Britain with both of those wins coming at Goodwood. Gary Moore's four-year-old is quickly turned out after a fifth place in a Sunday Series race at Sandown on good ground with the trainer naturally keen to make to most of the gelding's favoured conditions.
