Five horses who should relish the quick conditions at Royal Ascot on Tuesday
The going for day one of Royal Ascot is guaranteed to be quick after the track experienced its hottest day of the year on Sunday. Here are five horses who should relish the fast conditions on Tuesday.
Punters seeking an each-way alternative to Palace Pier in the Queen Anne Stakes may wish to consider the James Tate-trained Top Rank.
The lightly raced five-year-old was a more than creditable third when Palace Pier dominated the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury last month, and that was on ground slightly softer than Top Rank's ideal surface.
Four of his six career successes have come on going described as good or quicker (one of the others was on Lingfield's all-weather surface) and he was impressive when winning a Listed contest on quick ground at Doncaster on his seasonal reappearance.
An experienced campaigner on the dirt in the US, Extravagant Kid has taken his form to a new level on his recent turf appearances and could be the one to throw down the gauntlet to Battaash.
At odds of 20-1, the then seven-year-old ran a superb race from the widest draw to finish one and a quarter lengths behind Glass Slippers in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint on good ground in November.
After three consecutive seconds back on dirt at the start of the year, he returned to the turf at Meydan in March and landed the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint, winning by half a length on a quick surface.
St James's Palace Stakes (4.20)
The Richard Hannon-trained three-year-old was keen in the early stages of the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket before running on impressively to claim fifth and he will certainly be suited by underfoot conditions in an open-looking St James's Palace.
Chindit's only defeats have come at Newmarket and he is three from three on good ground. Perhaps even more pertinently, he found even quicker going no problem when winning at Ascot last summer.
2021 St James's Palace: the runners, the odds, the verdict
Joint-trainers William Muir and Chris Grassick have really hit their stride with five winners in June and they will be delighted to see quicker conditions for Just Hubert in the Ascot Stakes.
The five-year-old won three times on good and good to firm in 2019 and was a surprise winner at Goodwood last year on quick ground.
He earned a career-best Racing Post Rating of 99 when finishing third in a hot handicap at Haydock in May on heavy ground and should be better suited by this return to his ideal conditions.
ITV Racing tips: one key runner from each race on ITV on day one
Andrea Atzeni won the inaugural Copper Horse Stakes last year with Fujaira Prince and has an excellent chance of repeating the feat in the same colours with Throne Hall, who should relish the conditions.
The Sheikh Mohammed Obaid-owned four-year-old has been in consistent form this campaign, but his best performance came when winning on good ground at Doncaster at the end of March.
Conditions were on the softer side for Throne Hall last time when he ran a fine third to Ilaraab at York and a return to quicker ground, allied with a step up in trip, should be right up his street.
