Sheikh Fahad swoops to buy record-breaking Norfolk Stakes hope The Lir Jet
Fresh from his blistering triumph with Kameko in last Saturday's 2,000 Guineas, Sheikh Fahad Al Thani has moved to keep his summer run of success going at Royal Ascot next week by purchasing live Norfolk Stakes contender The Lir Jet.
Generally 10-1 second favourite for the Group 2 juvenile dash, the son of Prince Of Lir broke the all-aged track record at Yarmouth when scoring on his debut over five furlongs last week when he carried the colours of trainer Michael Bell's son Nick.
The purchase will make a tidy profit for assistant Nick, who acquired the colt privately after he was sold to breeze-up consignor Robson Aguiar for just £8,000 at the Goffs UK Premier Sales at Doncaster last August.
Originally pencilled in for the breeze-up sales, The Lir Jet instead entered into training with Derby-winning handler Bell and had been showing plenty of prowess at home prior to his two and three-quarter length defeat of Steadman on the Norfolk coast.
David Redvers, racing manager to Qatar Racing, said: "Sheikh Fahad is always on the lookout for the right horse and watched The Lir Jet win at Yarmouth and liked what he saw. Hopefully, we'll see that blistering turn of foot in the Norfolk Stakes next Friday. He looks a strong individual and looks a ready made Royal Ascot runner."
Michael Bell said: "It's great that Sheikh Fahad has stepped in for The Lir Jet and he's a great friend who I've trained successfully for before. We have a great working relationship and hopefully we can do so again."
Four other Qatar Racing purchases who went to Royal Ascot
Named after the co-author of the Communist Manifesto, Frederick Engels ran three times for Howard Wilson’s Norton Common Farm before Sheikh Fahad Al Thani stepped in to buy the Iceman colt for a six-figure sum after his win at Musselburgh.
Remaining with trainer David Brown and switched into the colours of Qatar Racing, the enterprise representing Sheikh Fahad and his brothers Sheikh Hamad and Sheikh Suhaim, Frederick Engels landed the 2011 Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot as the well-backed 9-4 favourite.
Upward Spiral
An impressive winner on her debut for trainer Tom Dascombe and the Trinity Hammers Syndicate, Upward Spiral went to the 2012 Queen Mary Stakes as one of the buzz horses.
However, she was unable to match her debut performance only managing fourth at Royal Ascot in a race won by stablemate Ceiling Kitty, who would go on to produce 2018 Chesham Stakes winner Arthur Kitt.
Capella Sansevero
A 25,000gns buy as a yearling, Capella Sansevero made a rapid start to his career with three wins from as many starts for trainer Ger Lyons and owner Sean Jones.
Capella Sansevero was sent to the 2014 Goffs London Sale on the eve of Royal Ascot, and Sheikh Fahad splashed out £1.3m to acquire the colt, who would go on to find only The Wow Signal, purchased privately by Sheikh Fahad’s cousin Sheikh Joaan prior to Ascot, too strong in the Coventry Stakes.
Marchingontogether
Purchased for £800 and named after a Leeds United song, Marchingontogether made a winning debut at Leicester in May 2017. Enterprising owner Richard Wilson, of BGC Racing, had already been in contact with Sheikh Fahad on social media regarding other projects, and that familiarity made securing the deal for the Ivan Furtado-trained filly all the smoother.
Marchingontogether finished 11th in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot as a 33-1 shot.
