Former French racing boss offers intriguing 'third way' solution to the issue of allowing geldings to run in the Arc

Former France Galop president Edouard de Rothschild has volunteered an idea that he hopes could satisfy both sides in the debate on whether geldings should be allowed to run in future editions of the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Rothschild was at the helm of French racing's governing body in 2019, the last occasion that its influential Flat council debated whether to lift the ban on geldings being entered in the Arc and other key races previously deemed essential to promoting thoroughbred breeding.

Earlier this week, Henri Pouret, deputy director general of France Galop, confirmed that lifting the ban on geldings in the Arc and the Prix Jacques le Marois would be put before the Flat council again this autumn as part of wider discussions as to what should be the main planks of France Galop's 2030 strategic plan.
