Arc outsiders: three each-way plays who can outrun their odds at Longchamp next weekend
The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe takes centre stage at Longchamp next weekend and a typically competitive field looks set to line up for the Group 1 contest. Here we select three horses at each-way prices who can outrun their odds . . .
Mqse De Sevigne
Andre Fabre's five-year-old has developed into a very consistent mare, finishing in the first two in each of her last ten starts and winning all four outings this season.
She produced a joint-career-best Racing Post Rating of 120 when landing the Prix Rothschild over a mile at Deauville in July before running out a narrow winner of the Prix Jean Romanet stepped up to 1m2f last time.
A three-time winner at Longchamp, this track clearly holds no fears, but the 1m4f trip is an unknown as she is yet to race beyond 1m2½f.
Fabre, the most successful trainer in Arc history, does not expect Mpse De Sevigne to fail for a lack of stamina, though, saying after the Romanet that "the 2,400 metres should be fine for her as the family has plenty of stamina."
With the Arc reported to have been the long-term target this season, Mqse De Sevigne's current odds of 33-1 look too big to ignore.
Fantastic Moon
An impressive winner of last year's Deutsches Derby before a similarly taking success in the Prix Niel over the Arc course and distance, Fantastic Moon was sent off 12-1 for last year's Arc, but he failed to land a blow, finishing 11th behind Ace Impact.
However, that run has not put his connections off another crack at the Longchamp showpiece, and he arrives in career-best form, producing an RPR of 120 when claiming his second Group 1 win in the Grosser Preis von Baden earlier this month.
The Arc will provide a far sterner test for Fantastic Moon, but the Sarah Steinberg-trained colt held off a decent yardstick in Dubai Honour last time, while the third, Narrativo, had finished a similar distance behind fellow Arc hopeful Al Riffa in last month's Grosser Preis von Berlin – albeit receiving 3lb more in weight from Joseph O'Brien's colt.
Al Riffa is as short as 8-1 for the Arc, while Fantastic Moon can be backed at 40-1 and there appears to be too much of a discrepancy in those prices.
Fast Tracker
This son of Churchill won his first three starts impressively, shooting to the top of the Prix du Jockey Club betting after landing a Chantilly Listed race by seven lengths in May.
Purchased by Wathnan Racing before the Jockey Club, Fast Tracker led in the early stages of the race but weakened dramatically when headed a furlong and a half out, ultimately beating just one rival home under James Doyle.
He was given a break after that no-show and caught the eye when fifth of seven in the Group 3 Prix du Prince d'Orange over 1m2f at Longchamp on his reappearance.
Fast Tracker looked held positioned in last two furlongs out, but he hit the line hard under Ryan Moore. He's entitled to come on for the outing and, on the evidence of that run, stepping up to 1m4f is certain to suit.
There's enough juice in triple-figure odds to make him of each-way appeal.
