2024 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe runners, tips and ratings: David Jennings' pinstickers' guide
A field of 16 runners will go to post for the 2024 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (3.20) at Longchamp this Sunday, but who will come out on top in Europe's most prestigious Flat race? Read our runner-by-runner guide featuring top quotes and star ratings for the big race live on ITV3 at 3.20pm.
1 Zarakem
DJ's view: This colt is like the Hokey Cokey – in, out, in, out. Beats Horizon Dore in the Prix d'Harcourt, then beats only one home in the Prix Ganay. Almost beats Auguste Rodin in the Prince of Wales's Stakes, then gets beaten 22 lengths into 11th by City Of Troy in the Juddmonte International. He's due to be in this time, but surely he won't be in enough to win an Arc. Not for me.
Trainer's view: Jerome Reynier: "He worked at Marseille-Borely racecourse under Cristian [Demuro] with the hood and adapted well to the headgear. I'm very happy with him and with his draw in stall one."
Star rating: **
2 Haya Zark
DJ's view: The Ganay winner has had a corking campaign, but he managed to beat only one home in last year's Arc and, while he will probably improve upon that, he will still probably have more in front of him than behind him at the line.
Trainer's view: Adrien Fouassier: "Everything has gone very well the build up and now I'd just like to see some rain for him. He's not been for any kind of racecourse gallop since his comeback run, all his work has been at home on the sand."
Star rating: *
3 Fantastic Moon
DJ's view: The Racing Post's betting editor Keith Melrose is utterly convinced Fantastic Moon is the overpriced one in the Arc and cannot understand the gap between him and Al Riffa in the market. Last year's German Derby and Prix Niel winner travelled sweetly for a long way in last year's race, but a top-six finish is the best you can hope for, Keith. Sorry.
Owner's view: Lars-Wilhelm Baumgarten, syndicate manager for Liberty Racing: "If the weather gods are with us then we will run. If it is softer than 3.6 then we won't run, that is our decision. But we are hopeful and it is great to have a second runner for the syndicate in the Arc."
Star rating: **
4 Al Riffa
DJ's view: The National Stakes winner at two, who got within three-quarters-of-a-length of Ace Impact at three and has scared City Of Troy and already won a Group 1 at four. Joseph O'Brien is on fire, too. Coming into the big race he had trained 16 winners in 14 days. This imposing individual is unexposed over this trip and he has been trained with one day and one day only in mind this season. This is that day. You cannot write him off, although our very own former bookie turned pro punter Johnny Dineen thinks he has "zero chance" and will be laying him in every market he can.
Trainer's view: Joseph O'Brien: "At the start of this year we said that if there is one race we want him to be bang on for, it's the Arc. He has a realistic chance of running very well."
Star rating: ****
5 Sevenna's Knight
DJ's view: Stayer. Has never won over shorter than 1m6f, so surely speed will catch him out. Will keep going, but keeping going doesn't win you Arcs. You need a turn of foot and this guy lacks just that.
Trainer's view: Andre Fabre: "I'm very fond of him and I think if the ground becomes heavy he could have a good chance. There is rain forecast and every drop will help. He's a good horse."
Star rating: *
6 Continuous
DJ's view: Last year's St Leger winner was arguably the one to take out of last year's Arc, yet he arrives back 12 months later and is 25-1. He could outrun those odds, but you couldn't say his season has gone according to plan.
Trainer's view: Aidan O'Brien: "He's drawn out a bit wider, but he seems well. He ran well in the race last year and it just didn't suit him having to make his own running in the Prix Foy. It was obviously a very slow pace and he will be much better in a more strongly run race."
Star rating: ***
7 Bluestocking
DJ's view: A fabulous filly who has been supplemented at a cost of €120,000. Money well spent? Possibly. She's gone from strength to strength this season and you can only adore her attitude. Is she good enough, though? I have a feeling she will finish somewhere between third and sixth.
Trainer's view: Ralph Beckett: "We know she likes Longchamp and the draw and ground will be fine for her. I'm very hopeful that she'll be in the mix."
Star rating: ***
8 Mqse De Sevigne
DJ's view: A winning machine. On a five-timer. This is the first time she has gone this far, however. Of her eight wins, she has won by a nose, a short-head, a head, a short-neck and a half-length. She has never won by more than a length and a half. You could certainly argue 25-1 is a big price, but is a 25-1 loser any better than a 6-4 loser? No.
Trainer's view: Andre Fabre: "She has never been further than a mile and a quarter so that's restricted her in a number of races but now she has the opportunity to run further, which I think will help her."

9 Look De Vega
DJ's view: Sensational in the Prix du Jockey Club, but his unbeaten record and air of invincibility went up in smoke when he was stuffed by Sosie in the Prix Niel. That was his first start for 105 days so maybe he needed it badly to blow away the cobwebs. Could still be a superstar, but has plenty to find with Sosie, all the same.
Trainer's view: Yann Lerner: "He had to make the running in the Niel which isn't his usual style of racing. Last week he worked as well as he did before the Jockey Club and he filled me with confidence."
Star rating: ***
10 Shin Emperor
DJ's view: Is this the one? Is this the guy who quenches Japan's thirst for the Arc? He might well be, and had things gone more smoothly up the straight in the Irish Champion Stakes he would surely have got much closer to Economics. That was a stepping stone for this. He'll be bang there at the business end. Cracking chance.
Trainer's view: Yoshito Yahagi: "He wasn’t in the best shape heading to Ireland and I thought it would be a very tough ask. Despite all that he ran third, which is very encouraging."
Star rating: ****
11 Sunway
DJ's view: Maybe 40-1 is too big but, at the same time, Sunway is 0-6 this season. He was found out in the King George and he might be found out at Longchamp too against his elders, for all that he's a lovely colt.
Trainer's view: David Menuisier: "He's not got the best draw but I'm not that bothered and maybe Oisin [Murphy] can do a 'Golden Horn' and go straight before coming over to just sit off the pace."
Star rating: **
12 Delius
DJ's view: Sosie has been his nemesis of late, beating him in the Grand Prix de Paris and again in the Prix Niel. I think he'll beat him again here.
Rider's view: Ioritz Mendizabal: "He really pleased me in the Prix Niel – he got the trip very well and showed he handles the ground. I'm confident he'll run well."

13 Sosie
DJ's view: A star. I'm sure of it. Got a few hefty bumps from Ghostwriter when trying to come with his run in the Prix du Jockey Club. I've upgraded that effort and he's been pretty flawless in the Grand Prix de Paris and the Prix Niel. He's progressive and he must have a huge amount of raw ability to win the Niel in the manner he did having been so keen for so long. Your 2024 Arc winner, ladies and gentleman.
Trainer's view: Andre Fabre: "He's a big strong horse and he wasn't really fit enough in the spring. Now he's coming nicely into form. I was pleased with his prep race in the Niel because he won it quite easily. But is it enough to win the Arc?"
Star rating: *****
14 Los Angeles
DJ's view: Has been the Ballydoyle number one for the Arc for quite some time. Ever since City Of Troy was pointed in the direction of Del Mar, this guy has been Arc bound. The track, the trip and the ground should all be absolutely perfect, but is he an absolute superstar? That's the concern, but a cracking run on the cards.
Trainer's view: Aidan O'Brien: "He's done well since Leopardstown and his work has been as good as we could have expected. I suppose the Arc has been the plan since the Irish Derby. We were hoping that if he finished in the first four at Leopardstown it would be good enough to run in the Arc and that's what he did."
Star rating: ***
15 Survie
DJ's view: Tom Marquand will have to turn into David Copperfield and pull a rabbit out of his hat to get this filly home in front.
Trainer's view: Nicolas Clement: "We're putting a line through her run in the Vermeille and we know she is one of the leading three-year-old fillies in France along with Sparkling Plenty."
Star rating: *
16 Aventure
DJ's view: Really progressive filly who looked like beating Bluestocking for a long way in the Prix Vermeille. She could get placed here, but it's hard to see her winning.
Trainer's view: Christophe Ferland: "We thought for a long time about which race to run in but this is her trip. Everything has gone well since the Vermeille."
Star rating: **
