Brian Ellison has described the collapse in Onesmoothoperator's price for next week’s Melbourne Cup as “crazy” and hopes his dream trip to Australia can have a fairytale ending in the big race.

Onesmoothoperator fulfilled one of Ellison's lifelong ambitions when winning the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle in June, but arrived in Melbourne at the start of the month as an unconsidered 100-1 shot for the Flemington showpiece.

Ellison’s stable star was cut to 12-1 for the Melbourne Cup after an impressive two-and-a-quarter-length victory in the Geelong Cup last week and is now challenging for second favouritism with Paddy Power at a best-price 6-1 alongside Vauban after leading fancy Jan Brueghel was ruled out on Tuesday. Buckaroo heads the market at a general 4-1.
