He had already farmed 14 Group 1s in 2021 but Charlie Appleby has described the rollercoaster weekend that saw him depart the Breeders’ Cup in Del Mar with three more spectacular top-level victories as having taken things "to a different level".

After Modern Games’s dramatic triumph in Friday’s Juvenile Turf, Space Blues and Yibir combined on Saturday to crown the Moulton Paddocks trainer's incredible year, one that has also seen him plunder the Derby and King George with Adayar and the Irish Derby and St Leger with Hurricane Lane.

After an eerily similar incident to Albahr’s panicked moment in the stalls before the Juvenile Turf, Appleby watched on as Master Of The Seas had to be scratched in similar circumstances before the Mile, after which Space Blues brought the curtain down on his career with a victory under William Buick.
