Covid-19 restrictions mean betting shops will be closed in Britain and Ireland on Saturday, which may be a nuisance to once-a-year punters hoping to strike gold in the Randox Grand National at Aintree.

There are a number of ways to still bet on arguably the world's best-known race – due off at 5.15pm – including through the Racing Post website and app, which can be downloaded from the Apple or Google Play store.

To open an account with an online bookmaker you will need to be 18 and can register like you would with many other websites.

Deposits can be made with a debit card or other payment methods such as PayPal and you will be able to set responsible gambling limits as well.

You may recognise some firms from their presence on the high street, while others might be less familiar.

Who you choose who to bet with is, of course, up to you.

One operator's standout odds about your selection could tempt you, while another firm's each-way terms may appeal.

It is common for new customers to be offered bonuses and free bets, so they should be checked out as well and more information can be found here.

You will then be able to pick your horse, which should be no different to how you would make your selection in a normal year.

Perhaps it is the name that draws you in, or some distinctive colours, or even your lucky number – there are 40 runners, remember.

If you are not blessed with the most tech-savvy skills in the world you might be able to call on a young whizz kid and just give them the money!

Good luck.
