Lauded but unloved. Is Galopin Des Champs the Steve Davis of the jump racing scene in 2025?

Like the six-time world champion who dominated snooker in the 1980s, his ability is not in question and his achievements are hugely admired. Yet there is a suggestion he does not quite receive the affection that the public gives to other stars of his sport, especially in Britain.

When Best Mate was going for a third Cheltenham Gold Cup win in 2004, the media was ablaze with coverage of him and his connections. Yet Galopin Des Champs has seemingly not captured the public imagination in the way that horse did. And when the hot favourite attempts to emulate his Gold Cup hat-trick in March, nor are the racegoers likely to be buying scarves in his colours in the way they did when the hugely popular Kauto Star and Denman took each other on in 2010.
