Champion Stakes is surely between Economics and Calandagan - but this outsider merits consideration in alternative markets

Having a horse the calibre of Calandagan or Economics would have helped the Arc no end, but Longchamp’s loss is Ascot’s gain and this running of the Champion Stakes looks an absolute cracker. 

Two of the best middle-distance turf horses on the planet are set to lock horns and there is nothing in it. While Racing Post Ratings have Calandagan 3lb clear of Economics by dint of his Juddmonte International second to City Of Troy, we probably have the right favourite in Economics. 

Economics squandered significant ground by racing wide at Leopardstown and dug in grittily when Auguste Rodin came to challenge. Being by Night Of Thunder, softer ground could easily enable him to raise his game.
