It was baseball legend Lou Piniella who said: "Statistics are like bikinis - they show a lot but not everything." He might be right, but Charlie Appleby has been hitting a hell of a lot of home runs at Breeders' Cups of late and he brings the most staggering stat of all into the 41st running of the great international event.

The Godolphin trainer is ten from 20 with his Breeders' Cup runners, an eye-watering 50 per cent strike-rate. Not only that, but he is bidding to become the first trainer in the history of the event to win the same race four years in a row as Notable Speech seeks to add his name to the Mile roll of honour alongside Space Blues (2021), Modern Games (2022) and Master of the Seas (2023).

None of them won the 2,000 Guineas but Notable Speech did, and Appleby feels he is the highest quality three-year-old he has ever brought to a Breeders' Cup.
