What will the appointment of the new PM mean for racing?
Good news! The next prime minister of the United Kingdom is definitely going to be someone who knows horseracing's little world and has given every impression of liking it. That will be true whether members of the Conservative Party have chosen Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss, who is trading at 1-33 and might therefore be seen as halfway through the door to 10 Downing Street.
Both have spent days at the races and worked in government departments that occasionally have to deal with racing or have cause to interact with its ruling body. Both have successful businesses in their constituency that depend on racing continuing to thrive.
Sunak is the more obviously connected to racing in this regard. He represents the North Yorkshire constituency of Richmond, one of the minority of Parliamentary seats to contain a racecourse, in this case Catterick, where he opened a new stand last year.
