There is always a battle for early position in the Paddy Power Gold Cup and there were eight lined up to go forward on the two-and-a-half-mile chute on Saturday.

That's not only because this is really competitive but also because of the layout of the Old course.

There are three quick fences before the first bend, and through the whole race you spend a lot of your time turning left and going downhill. Speed and a good position are really important. If you're too far back, you can lose touch with what's happening on the front end.
