Who Am I?

Clue 1 I come from a large racing family and naturally I wanted to make a distinctive impression while my brothers were also trying to forge their own careers. Looking back, I’d like to think I achieved that, largely thanks to an excellent relationship I built up with one particular employer. I remember one especially durable and well-bred horse who won four Group 1s for us and came within inches of another. We got our revenge on that winner a month later at York.

Clue 2 How often does the pacemaker win a Group 1? It happens once in a blue moon. We all remember Serpentine but that was already four years ago. It’s not a regular thing, so how many jockeys have done it twice? I might be the only one – and I did it in the same race, seven years apart. Off I went in front and never came back, 66-1 the first time, 33-1 the next. Next time your mate is praising some jockey for having a clock in their head, think of that and maybe give me a mention.

Who Am I features in The Front Runner, Chris Cook’s weekday morning newsletter. The Front Runner includes a clue each day from Monday to Thursday before revealing the answer on Friday, as well as news, views and tips on the day’s racing. It is exclusively for Members’ Club Ultimate subscribers.
