Who Am I?

Clue 1 It was fun to get my first ride in the Arc but, realistically, he was never going to be quick enough. He was a top-class winner that year but a lot of people would probably regard him as a tiny bit fortunate in his biggest moment. Anyway, he was a stayer and at Longchamp he just wasn't quick enough. I didn't take part in the Arc in the last few seasons of my career, so it ended up that my final ride in the race finished last. But in between those two extremes, there were much better days.

Clue 2 The Arc kept me waiting. Of my first five rides, not one of them managed to finish in the first ten. I finally cracked it on a horse trained at Chantilly. We had a good draw and could have gone forward to make the most of it but you should see the speed the pacemakers went off that year, it was mad. I wanted no part of the early gallop and, by the end of the back straight, there were only three behind us. At the home turn, you might have had trouble picking us out. But then came that most enjoyable of all experiences, pulling wide for a clear run and feeling your mount start to charge . . .

Clue 3 There's a certain French trainer whose record in the Arc is unmatched. He gave me more rides in the race than any other trainer - at one point, after we'd had a bit of luck together, he provided my Arc mount for six years in a row. You'd think it would be a great system. If you add his career highlights to mine, you'd get a colossal amount of success. But none of those six made the the first three and nor did one of my last mounts in the race, a horse who'd won the Derby under someone else. They weren't good enough on the day but in the next clue I'll tell you about another horse who was . . .

Clue 4 The commentator said, in the immediate aftermath, that I'd never ridden a better race. Hmmm, it probably isn't strictly true but I'm glad he liked it. I was on a great horse against great rivals and we won in dramatic style. The same horse had suffered a high-profile defeat earlier in the year, losing a race he probably should have won by leaving it too late, so that was the danger, the mistake that should not be repeated. One broadcaster had a pundit give some mid-race analysis: 'He's settled quite beautifully. Admittedly, it would be nicer if he was a little bit closer to the lead ... I'm full of hope, still.' But if I'd been closer to the lead, there would have been that much less drama in the straight.
