Who Am I?

Clue 1 Being a jockey was not my job, it was more like a passion, the thing I always wanted to do. And I had a good go at it, a longer run than almost anyone, I should think. I was champion apprentice in my second year riding, albeit that was some decades ago. I never won the Derby but I was second on a horse who started at double-figure odds (having been beaten at odds-on in his trial). We hit the front in the straight, too.

Clue 2  Arguably the most significant success of my career came quite early – too early for me to appreciate it, really. It was a horse who'd changed trainer during the season but he kept his jockey, a really cool and stylish star, until they got beat 31 lengths in a Group 1. That was my chance. We won a Group 3 together and then the big one at double-figure odds, with my mount's former rider back in fifth on a 7-2 shot.

Clue 3 This weekend brings back a happy memory for me, when everything went smoothly in one of the feature contests. It looked a competitive race but I had little to do in the end. We settled out the back while the favourite over-raced up the front, then a gap opened up at just the right moment and we sailed through. It was joyfully easy. I had some good days on that horse. He was originally trained in North Yorkshire but I picked up the ride after he was moved 480 miles south of there.

Clue 4 White gloves - I'm known for wearing them when I ride and you'll see them in every single bit of race footage of me. It's not some affectation I picked up in an attempt to differentiate myself when I was building a reputation, I was wearing them from my very first ride. White in the afternoon, black on the gallops in the morning. I don't feel comfortable without them. White gloves at the races, I think, shows respect for the people who employ you.
