'She's achieved an awful lot in a short space of time and you'd be dreaming of the Cheltenham Festival for her'
Conor Fennelly gets the lowdown from increasingly powerful Irish trainer Gavin Cromwell
Gavin Cromwell continues to go from strength to strength. It’s just ten seasons ago that his seasonal totals were still in single figures, yet last term saw him send out 72 winners in Ireland, a new personal best, plus another 14 in Britain, including two at the Cheltenham Festival and in a Grade 1 at Aintree. Across the two countries combined, his prize-money eclipsed €2 million.
Flooring Porter is perhaps the biggest star in the Cromwell yard, as the dual Stayers’ Hurdle hero underlined with a hugely popular success in the Kerry National in September. An injury that rules him out for the rest of the campaign is a wretched blow, but it’s a sign of Cromwell’s progress that there are still plenty waiting in the wings to pick up his mantle.
