Mark Johnston: 'But for Charlie, I might think it was time to pack up and run'
Peter Thomas talks to the trainer about kids, Covid, survival and retirement
Mark Johnston's son has had a tough time during the pandemic. It's not easy being a busker when the streets are getting meaner by the minute, or a singing waiter when the restaurants are half-empty and the world's going to hell in a handcart.
Still, he studied business at university, has an entrepreneurial streak to fall back on, and manages a bunch of student flats in Glasgow, which has helped during the lean times. You may also have seen him and his mum performing the 'Kingsley House acoustic sessions' during lockdown, so Covid clearly hasn't robbed him of his musical mojo.
Just to clarify, that's Angus Johnston, younger son. Not Charlie Johnston, who's his big brother. The pair both rode when they were younger, but Angus preferred polo to racing. Angus did a year at PWC, training to be an accountant, and sang in ski resorts during the winter. Charlie is an assistant trainer.
