It's been 25 years of drama and upheaval - but just who has shaped racing the most?

Chris Cook counts down the 25 people who have had the biggest influence on the sport in the 21st century

25 Nicky Henderson

With the backing of owners such as JP McManus and Michael Buckley, Henderson has been almost constantly in the headlines for the past 15 years, thanks to stars like Binocular, Long Run, Bobs Worth, Sprinter Sacre, Altior, Shishkin and many others. From early in his career, it was clear Cheltenham in March was what the game was all about for him and it could be argued he has helped to make that a trend.

24 Michael O'Leary

Ireland's answer to John McCririck, O'Leary has so many strongly held opinions that it can be hard to keep track, and he is completely at home in front of a camera and also in the eye of a storm. His maroon and white colours win often, thanks to a massive investment in horses, especially a type that other owners find uncommercial: strong stayers. O'Leary has won two Gold Cups and three Grand Nationals and is still winning Grade 1s (the Morgiana, the Drinmore) five years after he announced an intention to step back.

23 Lisa Hancock

Chief executive of the Injured Jockeys Fund since 2010, starting just a few months after the opening of its first centre in Lambourn. The IJF had been a pastoral charity, helping those in need, and Oaksey House was initially seen as a home for ex-jockeys. It became clear there was enormous demand for its rehab and fitness facilities, which have been expanded and improved under Hancock's leadership and replicated in new-build centres in Newmarket and Malton, while smaller hubs have also opened in Taunton and Galashiels. The IJF has become an important presence in the lives of Britain's jockeys, helping cut recovery times.
