'If I stopped training I'd get so bored I'd probably take to men or drink!'

Julian Muscat meets Britain's oldest female trainer - and a Classic heroine

Only when she got home did Pam Sly realise exactly what had come to pass in the winner's enclosure after the 1,000 Guineas in 2006.

She obviously knew that Speciosa, the filly she trained and part-owned, had won the Classic by making all the running up the stands' rail. She remembered her state of joyous delirium after her £30,000 purchase had humbled runners from Flat racing's grandest stables. But she had one overriding concern at the time.

"I was too worried about all the people around Speciosa," Sly relates. "She was always sparky and could let fly at any time. I didn't want anybody getting hurt."
