Racing's greatest mystery will never be forgotten. It cannot be, as it is mentioned with such regularity, even by people who couldn't tell Becher's Brook from Beachy Head.
During last year's Conservative Party leadership election, an article centred on the front-runner asked: "Will Boris do a Devon Loch?"
When Lewis Hamilton lost the Formula 1 championship after leading by 17 points with two races remaining in 2007 it was "a Devon Loch calamity", while halfway through Jessica Ennis-Hill's 2012 Olympic heptathlon was the comment: "It would take a Devon Loch-style collapse to deny her the gold medal now."
