If you think it is easy to pick out the top 25 Flat horses from the first 25 years of the century, think again. Choosing the horses was hard enough, never mind having to rank them against one other.
Although this list of horses trained in Britain, Ireland and France puts a premium on ability, individuals have been upgraded or downgraded from their best Racing Post Rating (RPR) by dint of how much they thrilled us. In this compilation, longevity wins out over one-race wonders.
Of 27 horses to achieve a RPR of 131 or higher, 22 competed over ten and 12 furlongs. The fact none were stayers has been redressed here, given the pleasure they have given us.
