Garth Broom on the turn of events that led him to become a racehorse owner
Anne and Garth Broom go under the name Brocade racing and have enjoyed huge success over jumps since starting out in 2008 – most famously with 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Native River. Garth Broom speaks to James Stevens about his venture into ownership.
Both of my uncles were amateur jockeys and bred horses in point-to-points, so I was always around horses from the early days. I remember seeing them win some hunter chases and that's where I first got into it.
I remember the Arkle and Mill House days and those iconic horses, but there's a race at Wincanton that always sticks out. It wasn't a big race but I always remember David Nicholson dictating the pace on a horse called Chinese Lacquer – he was half a length in front all the way and it was brilliant. I've always liked front-runners.
