10 Blackmore makes history

April 10, 2021 was a seminal day in the sport’s history as one of racing’s great glass ceilings was shattered. In the not-too-distant past female jockeys were often disparaged and the idea of one winning the world’s most famous steeplechase seemed, at best, outlandish.

But Blackmore had already gone where no female rider had gone before by becoming the first woman to be the Cheltenham Festival’s leading rider one month earlier, and now she followed up by becoming the first to win the Grand National.
